Itinerary Medieval Cuenca

Starting Point - Steps of the Cathedral

The Guided Tour starts from the Steps of the Cathedral.

Ronda de Julián Romero

We walk through the narrow street of Ronda Julián Romero to the upper part of the Old town, explaining the history of the most important buildings and the views of this medieval town: the Posada de San José, the 19th century Toilets, the San Pedro church, the Prison of the Inquisition, The Hanging Houses, The San Pablo Bridge, The San Pablo Convent, the Ruins of the Castle,…

Ronda del Júcar

From the highest point of the tour we walk down through the amazing Ronda del Júcar, with the stunning views over the River Júcar Gorge. Here we speak about the defense of town, the Legend of the Conquest of Cuenca by the King Alfonso VIII,…

The old Alcázar Quarter

We have to climb a short flight of steps to the Quarter of the old Alcázar. Arabs, Jews and Christians lived here,.. but what remains of the past? We speak about the history of the old buildings of this quarter. Some were palaces, … what happened with them? We observe the Torre de Mangana, but what´s was its original function before it was a clock tower?

The Street of Alfonso VIII

From the old Alcázar we walk down to the Street Alfonso VIII. Why are the Houses painted with these red, oranges and yellow colors? And why has the Blue House an entry at the second floor?

The Quarter of the Hanging Houses - End of the Tour

We leave behind the beautiful colored houses to enter the interesting Quarter of the Hanging Houses. Here we obsere some very tall houses, but how should we call them? Skyscrapers, or…? We finish our Guided Tour next to the most famous Houses of Cuenca and the San Pablo Bridge.

We really enjoyed our guided tour of Cuenca old town with Jurgen. He gave us great explanations and historical information about beautiful Cuenca and it’s many highlights, it really helped us plan the rest of our stay. If you’re after an excellent introduction to this wonderful city I highly recommend Jurgen’s tour.

A really worthwhile and interesting part of our trip to this beautiful little city. Jurgen vividly evoked the rich history of the alta cuidad: the contribution of its most notable citizens, and the more humble lives of its urban poor, to demonstrate how this helped create the buildings of this very special place. His knowledge and humour shone through – and he structured the tour so that the two hours were full of different architectural elements and city views but at a pace that felt very manageable in this place of lots of up and downs.

He was also very accommodating, with excellent communication; a problem I had created with our initial booking was quickly and efficiently resolved, and he was happy to answer our less historical questions about where we might replace a lost phone charger in the lower part of the city. Thank you Jurgen, you are an enthusiastic historian, a great guide and a really nice person. I would highly recommend one of your tours to enhance an itinerary for a trip to Cuenca. Which is also a Spanish treasure not to be missed.
